Endless Summer

Sat Jul 27 2024

Summer simmers like the cicada's heartbeat
Spiky stickers tag along on a cuffed bootcut
Follows you into the tall grass and dizzied sunflowers.
Weighted with the branding of a seared seatbelt and
Fuming on dry tobacco behind a screen.

In summertime we slither along matted carpet and hop
calloused heels over sun, sand, and asphalt.
I lick stamps and popsicles and I hold a limp empty leash.
The stereo summer sound stings static and sharp;
aqueous wobbly waves bounce or wiggle.

When the sun bays its golden halos into an amber afterglow,
I take long walks in the summertime afternoon
following wistful brooks and stepping stones into an allure.
Sweat stings my eyes like a bumblebee,
and I scrape my sandal on the sidewalk in pursuit of summer.
